The United States Supreme Court Building has two spiral staircases that are available for public viewing but require a little work to find. Trust me it’s worth the effort.

Due to security measures, I know big surprise there, you are no longer able to reach either the bottom, or the top, of the staircase. There is a wooden barrier / door set that has been placed in such a way as to allow continued use of the stairs, coupled with public viewing, yet stop the general public from completely entering the stairwell.

This shot required some subtle gymnastics and leaning over the railing backwards to get the correct framing. I was sure I was going to end up on my head in the basement, or arrested, or both…
