This is a shot I have been wanting for awhile, finally got some time to hang out at the Franklin Park Conservatory and get it done.

A Shot A Day – 2016(B) (086A of 365)-(26-03)

Nikon D810, Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VR

ISO 400 – 1/640 @ f/3.5 – 400mm

This image was definitely pre-planned in my mind and I spent some time waiting for the right moment to happen. I have always thought the butterflies sitting on the Chihuly glass sculpture would be a great shot. In my mind the specimen had to land just so and the depth of field had to highlight the subject and the arc of the glass, with no background detail factoring in the scene.

Not everyone would think that a 400mm lens is a great butterfly lens, but if you think through your distance from the shot and how the lens will compress and render the scene it makes complete sense. Don’t be afraid to go against the grain in lens choice.
