Introduction:

If you are a Sony E-Mount camera fan, and many are, you’ll be happy to hear that Sigma has just announced nine (9) Sigma Art Series lenses, offered as E-Mount versions. If you have previously used any of the Sigma Art Series lenses, you are already familiar with the fit, finish, and quality of these lenses, in a very good way.

The Lineup:

The nine (9) lens offered are:

  • 14mm f/1.8
  • 20mm f/1.4
  • 24mm f/1.4
  • 35mm f/1.4
  • 50mm f/1.4
  • 70mm f/2.8 Macro (New design)
  • 85mm f/1.4
  • 105mm f/1.4 (New design)
  • 135mm f/1.8

According to a source at Sigma, these lenses were just announced to give Sony users “the highest level of optical performance.”

New Blood:

As a part of the announcement, Sigma released specifications for the new 70mm f/2.8 Macro lens, as well as the 105mm f/1.4 lens. Sony Macro and Portrait shooters alike will no doubt be interested in checking out these new models, when available. The other seven (7) lenses in the new E-Mount lineup are lenses that are already available from Sigma in Canon, Nikon, and Sigma Mounts.

The Down Low:

Sigma is quoted as saying the new Sony E-mount lenses will “feature the same optical designs that have attracted rave reviews, but the lenses will also feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed.”

The lenses will support Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and High-Speed autofocus capabilities, features that did not work when adapting non-native mount Sigma Art Series lenses when using Sigma’s MC-11 converter.

The lenses will feature brass bayonet mounts and rubber sealing rings to ensure the longevity and operation of the mount, as well as aid in sealing dust and moisture out of the camera’s interior.

Lastly, these native mount lenses will work with Sony’s In-Camera image stabilization and support the In-Camera lens aberration correction technology (a Sony feature that performs in-camera correction of lens aberration issues, such as peripheral illumination, chromatic aberration, and lens distortion).

The Long Road:

Sigma says this is just the start of the company’s support for Sony gear, stating that it will
“Continue to introduce new E-Mount Art Series lenses moving forward.” Sigma also noted that it has for some time offered a “Mount Conversion Service” that lets you convert your existing Art Series lenses to any of their supported brand mounts if you wish to change which camera brand with which you can use your lenses.
